He has played with such renowned artists as Frank Wess, David Murray, Ali Ryerson, Flora Purim, Manu Dibango, Orphy Robinson, Courtney Pine and Jean Toussaint

In Classical
Rowland performs in various chamber groups and adventurous ensembles including Icebreaker, New Music Players, Lontano, Ixion, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Crash Ensemble

He has played with such orchestras as Philharmonia, Bournemouth Symphony, London Philharmonic, European Community Chamber and Royal Ballet Sinfonia

In Non-Western music
He has enjoyed playing with numerous stars including Olodum, Joyce, Airto, Gnawa Musicians of Morocco, Nana Vasconcelos and Gaspar Lawal

In Pop
Rowland has added his sound to numerous celebrated artists and bands recordings such as Incognito, George Benson, Joss Stone, Us3, Fightstar, Marc Almond and MC Solaar

Rowland leads several vibrant and colourful projects in the UK
The pulsating Mistura with tantalizing sounds from London and Brazil; Rowland Sutherland Sextet with influences from the Caribbean; Creative Force featuring the award winning vibest Orphy Robinson; In Kimbe with superb Sardinian vocalist Filomena Campus and the innovative group Myrtle with Alwynne Pritchard (vocals) and Thorolf Thuestad (computer)

As a soloist
Rowland enjoys performing solo flute music from various parts of the world including works by Jolivet, Takemitsu, Carter, Ferneyhough and Scelsi. As well as a host of British composers including Finnissy, Cutler, Toovey and Gander

As an educator
Rowland is professor at Trinity College of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He also tutors at the Royal Northern College of Music and lectures at Birmingham Conservatoire

ROWLAND performs a recital with pianist Mary Dullea for the 3rd London Festival of American Music. Takes place at The Warehouse, Waterloo, London on 6/10/10 at 7pm. A fascinating selection of contemporary music for flute and piano new to the UK from a wide spread of US composers.

ROWLAND performs on flute and alto flute in an international improvised music summit Alpenglow. Features a collaboration between some of the finest musicians from Styria in Austria and the UK. Takes place on 24 - 26/9/10 at the Vortex and Cafe Oto, London at 6pm onwards.

ROWLAND performs on flute, alto flute, piccolo and panpipes in the dynamic electric ensemble Icebreaker with Michael Gordon's Trance and David Lang's Cheating, Lying, Stealing. Then feat BJ Cole for Brian Eno's soundtrack Apollo, to be performed live to the film 'For All Mankind' at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London on 15 and 16/9/10.
