As Easter beckons, Brighton Festival Chorus returns to Brighton Dome for a special ‘in the round’ performance of JS Bach’s glorious St John Passion.

First performed in Leipzig on Good Friday 1724, Bach’s powerfully meditative interpretation of the Gospel of St John is a work of startling immediacy yet subtle nuance,
recreating the psychological and emotional conflict of Christ’s final days before His public trial and crucifixion.
Bach’s dramatic vision is brought vividly to life in this intimate Proms-style performance, which takes the singers in and amongst the audience.

Combining hypnotic bass lines and melodies, erupting into free ethereal passages and unknown places.

Reich’s 70s masterpiece brings together skin, wood, metal and voices in music that has its roots in Africa, but its lifeblood in the urban rhythms of NYC.
Currie’s band was created to perform it and they have the composer’s admiration.
This is as good as it gets when it comes to this piece – don’t miss an hour of transporting excellence.

“Currie’s 12-piece ensemble is exceptionally focused, and holds the audience rapt… Ultimately, all the different elements are reintroduced in the collective fourth section,
where the apparent contradictions between the skin, wood and metal timbres are magically dissolved in a joyous, propulsive finale that suddenly comes to a shockingly abrupt halt in perfect unison.”

Rowland Sutherland Quartet

Rowland Sutherland - Flutes

Ansuman Biswas - Indian Percussion

Pat Thomas - Piano & Electronics

Guillaume Viltard - Double Bass

Rowland’s quartet is a new dynamic group of highly respected musicians merging to create something transcendental, colourful, expansive, otherworldly and deep.
Music that is both driven and inventive with the occasional subterraneous excursion.

Evocative, worldly explorations of free improvisation, jazz and groove sounds with added inspirations from the Caribbean and India.
Ethereal themes converge with hypnotic rhythms, celestial textures, raw shifting ostinatos, psychedelic dub waves, colliding counterpoints and layers of sostenuto.
A rich blend of elements from this vibrant quartet that promises music-making that challenges as well as soothes the listener.

Tonight’s performance will mark the quartet’s debut concert.

Kraftwerk Uncovered - A Future Past

Icebreaker performs new work by J Peter Schwalm

with a new film created by Sophie Clements and Toby Cornish

Following their highly successful Brian Eno/Apollo tour, Icebreaker are turning their focus on another contemporary electronic pioneer – Kraftwerk.

German sound-scape artist and composer J. Peter Schwalm has created a new work for Icebreaker based on material from a range of Kraftwerk tracks.
Drawing deeply on the imagistic and sonic legacy of Kraftwerk’s back catalogue from the little known radical early albums,
to iconic material from Autobahn, Computer World and Trans-Europe Express, Schwalm articulates their journey from experimental krautrock band to international icons.

Described as the eyes to Schwalm’s ears, Sophie Clements, a long time collaborator of Schwalm, and Toby Cornish are producing an accompanying film for this work.
Filmed almost entirely in the Ruhrgebeit, the district from which Kraftwerk famously come, the film makes direct reference to Kraftwerk’s heritage,
setting the scene, for a picture of Germany at the time of early Kraftwerk, whilst at the same time touching upon themes ever-present in Kraftwerk’s vision
– technological progress, and man’s relation to it.

A purposeful departure from the dehumanised high-tech of the current Kraftwerk shows, the show references an earlier era of technological and industrial innovation,
and the experimental or avant-garde film and sound work that came as a result, presenting at the same time a nostalgic vision of a ‘future’ now passed,
and a modern reworking of a lost utopian dream.

Penya was formed by Colombian singer/songwriter Angelica Lopez in 2009. Hailing from Cartagena on Colombia's caribbean coast,
Angelica grew up immersed in local folklore and inspired by the music flooding the airwaves from elsewhere.
A professional singer by 17, Angelica toured to London where she formed Penya with 6 like-minded musicians.
In January 2012 Penya's debut EP was awarded the "Best of 2011" accolade by elWatusi.com - the leading online retailer for Latin music today.
Penya's recent single "Tu Recuerdo" has also been championed by BBC Radio DJ Gary Crowley and received repeat airplay on BBC London Radio.

Angelica's voice has been described as a unique combination of the ethereal with the earthy - think Bjork meets Celia Cruz!
Penya sound like a band with strong Latin roots but with influences from all over the planet. This is reflected by the band members playing credits which include:
Melt Yourself Down, Anga Diaz, Incognito, Joss Stone, the Gnawa Musicians of Morocco, Clave y Guaguanco, Olodum, and Flora Purim.

"Angelica Lopez' voice is perfect and her inspiration is powerful" - Lubi Jovanovic, DJ/Journalist, Straight No Chaser Magazine
"Penya has nailed that singular sweet spot: Smart, and with great hooks. Some of the best World dance music out there" -Bruce Polin, elWatusi.com

Nino Rota is a seminal figure in contemporary music, as composer, conductor and hugely influential teacher. He was also one of the best-loved of movie composers – perhaps best-known for The Godfather,
his scores for the films of Federico Fellini are especially memorable, brim-full of Mediterranean warmth, humour and romance.

After Rota's death in 1979, legendary American producer Hal Willner (Marianne Faithfull, Lou Reed, William S. Burroughs, Laurie Anderson, Saturday Night Live) set off to record Amarcord Nino Rota,
the first of what would become a long string of acclaimed musical tribute albums, featuring then-unknown musicians like Wynton Marsalis and Bill Frisell.

Tonight a stellar cast led by Carla Bley – ‘one of the great jazz composers of the past 40 years’ (Guardian) – brings some of Rota's timeless pieces from Fellini’s classics such as La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, and Juliet of the Spirits,
plus Rota's other film music including The Godfather, back to the Barbican stage, following its premiere in 2004, featuring extraordinary jazz and classical reinterpretations.

An evening of readings, music and commentary to recreate a salon evening in Mayfair as autumn moved towards winter in the year 1913.
Hosted as part of the Legatum Institute's latest Salon Series.
Cultural innovation was attaining new heights in the literary arts and the boundaries of musical forms were being extended in ways that excited the imagination.
Innovations by Erik Satie and experimentations by Francois Poulenc were transforming classical music.
Jazz was embracing the ethos of improvisation. Poets and novelists such as Rupert Brooke and Edith Wharton anticipated a future of progress.
Wireless and telegraph heralded a new age of international communication between cultures and peoples. But dissonance could also be detected.

As Sherlock Holmes said to Dr Watson in His Last Bow, set in the summer of 1914: "There's an east wind coming… such a wind as never blew on England yet.
It will be cold and bitter…and a good many of us may wither before its blast."

Horomona Horo Taonga puoro, literally translated as "treasure song" or "Singing Treasures" is the collective term given to the wide array of wind, percussive and string families of instruments.
A tohunga, or master of the instruments Horo has devoted the past thirteen years of his life to their full time study and practice.
Horomona performs and handles the full spectrum of the taonga puoro instruments with a measured skill, historical and cultural understanding as passed down to him by his mentors.
First the late Dr Hirini Melbourne and since 2006, Dr Richard Nunns - two of the men credited with the revival of the art-form.

"Gigs Pop Up in a Gallery, Raising Money for Charity"
Singer/songwriter, Melissa James, learned of the Small Steps Project charity in late 2012. Listening to the radio while driving one cold bleary December day,
she was drawn to the stories described by Small Steps Project founder, Amy Hanson, who talked of children and families she’d come across in Cambodia who were living and feeding from municipal rubbish tips

On arriving back home, she read more about the charity online and began wondering what she could do to help. Some weeks later the concept of Gig in a Gallery was born.
Combining her desire to put on concerts in art gallery spaces with raising money for Small Steps,
the idea seemed like a perfect way to fundraise while also connecting with others through her love of music and performing.

If you can’t make a gallery gig date but would like to make a donation to Small Steps Project,
do so via the Gig in a Gallery page on the Just Giving website or else text your donation amount to 70070 followed by this code GIAG77
