Rowland has performed at such venues as the Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Centre, North Sea Jazz Festival, Chatelet Les Halles, the Royal Concertgebouw, Amsterdam and Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall

In Jazz
He has played with such renowned artists as Frank Wess, David Murray, Carla Bley, Ali Ryerson, Flora Purim, Manu Dibango, Evan Parker, Orphy Robinson, Courtney Pine and Paolo Fresu

In Classical
Rowland has played in various chamber groups and adventurous ensembles including Icebreaker, New Music Players, Lontano, notes inegales, Ensemble Expose, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Decibel

He has played with such orchestras as Philharmonia, Bournemouth Symphony, London Philharmonic, European Community Chamber, Chamber Domaine and City of London Sinfonia

In Non-Western music
He has enjoyed playing with numerous stars including King Sunny Ade, Olodum, Joyce, Airto, Gnawa Musicians of Morocco, Nana Vasconcelos and Tunde Jegede

In Pop
Rowland has added his sound to numerous celebrated artists and bands recordings such as Incognito, George Benson, Joss Stone, Us3, Fightstar, Mezzoforte, Masters at Work and MC Solaar

Rowland leads several vibrant and colourful jazz projects in the UK
The pulsating Mistura with tantalizing sounds from the UK and Brazil; Rowland Sutherland Sextet with influences from the Caribbean; Creative Force featuring the award winning vibest Orphy Robinson; In Kimbe with superb Sardinian vocalist Filomena Campus and the innovative group Myrtle with Alwynne Pritchard (vocals) and Thorolf Thuestad (computer)

As a soloist
Rowland enjoys performing solo flute music from various parts of the world including works by Jolivet, Takemitsu, Carter, A Sierra, Ferneyhough and Scelsi. As well as a host of British composers including Finnissy, Cutler, Toovey and Hayden

As an educator
Rowland is professor at Trinity College of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He also tutors at the Royal Northern College of Music and lectures at Birmingham Conservatoire

SPECIAL NOTICE!
The Jazz on 3, BBC Radio 3 broadcast of Rowland's score Enlightenment (In the Spirit of A Love Supreme by John Coltrane) can be heard at this link until 4 March 2015.
It was performed at the 2014 James Lavelle Meltdown Festival to a sold out QEH with the inspirational soloists of the Enlightenment Ensemble and musical director Orphy Robinson.
The broadcast includes Rowland being interviewed by the host Jez Nelson.

This broadcast marks the 50th Anniversary of the release of John Coltrane's iconic album, A Love Supreme.
